The Implications of China’s Environmental Protection efforts for the Asia-Pacific Region and Beyond

Abstract:

With chart-topping levels of air, water, and soil pollution, China has embarked upon a significant new effort to clean-up its environment. The leaders have adopted amendments to the country’s Environmental Protection Law, pledged to achieve a CO2 emissions peak around 2030, and taken tough steps to strengthen environmental compliance by Chinese firms. Are these measures enough to turn around China’s environmental challenge? What further policies might be needed? What are the implications of China’s environmental protection efforts for the Asia-Pacific region and beyond?
