Abstract

Large parts of the developing world are confronted with severe environmental problems. Among them, China has not only become an international manufacturing hub for the entire world and the biggest economy but also one of the most polluted countries in the world. It is facing tremendous environmental pressure and suffers from air, water and soil pollution, desertification and deforestation of large tracts of land. The principal factors behind the environmental crisis in China are large scale industrialization and developmental activities. Moreover, China’s energy requirements are mainly met by burning coal in thermal power stations that result in air pollution and health problems. As a result of developmental activities like mining, construction of dams, setting up of industries, China’s environment is rapidly deteriorating and its environmental footprint is being felt globally. The presentation details some salient issues of environmental challenges faced by China to protect and sustain the environment while meeting the requirements of its expanding economy.
