The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) had an engaging month, as we continued our engagements and research on China and East Asia, through various events, activities, publications and contributions in the media.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

ICS held a Special Lecture entitled ‘Some Pitfalls In Making Assumptions About Chinese PLA's Military-Political Behaviour,’ which was delivered by R Adm. Sudarshan Y. Shrikhande on 3 May. We also hosted a delegation from China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) wherein India-China economic and trade cooperation, the Belt and Road Initiative and other issues of mutual interest were discussed.

Five Wednesday Seminars were conducted this month. Prof. Hemant Adlakha, Hon. Fellow, ICS delivered the first on ‘Post-Pulwama Commentaries in the Chinese Media’ at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). The second lecture entitled ‘The Boao Forum: A Revisit And A Rethink’ was delivered by Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, ICS Vice-Chairperson. This was followed by a seminar on the subject of ‘China And Its Quest For Water by Mr. R N Bhaskar, journalist and author of the book, Game India. Prof. Biswajit Dhar, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning,  Jawaharlal Nehru University, delivered a presentation entitled ‘China since its WTO Membership: An Exploration’ at the India International Centre (IIC). Lastly, Tamara Chin, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and East Asian Studies, Brown University, gave a talk on ‘The Silk Road Idea (1877-1971)’.

PUBLICATIONS

We published one ICS Occasional Paper this month entitled ‘Growth of Shipbuilding in China: The Science, Technology, and Innovation Routeby Cdr. (Dr.) Nitin Agarwala, Research Fellow, National Maritime Foundation and Mr. Rana Divyank Chaudhary, Associate Fellow, National Maritime Foundation.

The second issue of the 55th volume of China Report was published this month. It included contributions from ICS faculty including Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, ICS Vice-Chairperson; Amb. Kishan Rana, Emeritus Fellow, ICS; Prof. Alka Acharya, ICS Hon. Fellow; and Mr. Uday Khanapurkar, Research Assistant, ICS.

Our Research Interns put out three blog articles this month. Mr. Kuldeep Saini authored an article entitled ‘SME Financing: The need for Concrete Reforms in China’s Financial Sector’. Ms. Vidushi R. Singh penned a piece on ‘China, Global Capitalism and the Future World Order’. Lastly, Ms. Bhavana Giri commented on ‘The State of China’s Automobile Sector’.

IN THE MEDIA

Amb. Shyam Saran, Member, ICS Governing Council, penned a piece entitled ‘A Tough Neighbourhood’ for the India Today Magazine. ICS Hon. Fellow, Mr. Ravi Bhoothalingam, wrote a commentary on India’s view of the Belt and Road Initiative for the Wire. Srikanth Kondapalli, ICS Hon. Fellow, provided prescriptions for a post-election China policy in a piece carried by Financial Express.

ICS Visiting Fellow, Dr. Shamshad Khan, authored a piece on the Masood Azhar listing for Nikkei Asian Review. A piece on the same topic was written by Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, ICS Adjunct Fellow for Madras Courier. Our Research Associate, Dr. Gunjan Singh, penned two pieces this month. She commented on the second Belt and Road Forum for the Vivekananda International Foundation and republished the article on ORF Marathi. Her second piece entitled ‘Recent Trends in China's Population Policy and its Implications for the Chinese Economy’ was carried by the Science, Technology and Security Forum and was also republished on ORF Marathi. She also appeared on All India Radio to speak about the impact of the US-China trade war on Asia.

Our Research Assistant, Mr. Uday Khanapurkar wrote two pieces this month - one for the Vivekananda International Foundation on the implications of China’s economic slowdown for Africa; and another for Global Risk Insights entitled ‘China-US: A Trade War of Attrition?’.

Faculty Updates

ICS Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, delivered a lecture titled ‘Crucial Aspects of Asian Governance’ at the ‘Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations’ in Beijing, China, on 16 May. She also made a presentation on ‘Educational and Cultural Exchanges between India and China’ at the ‘BRI Media and Think Tank Interactions’ in Nanjing, China, held on 19 May. Prof. Alka Acharya, ICS Hon. Fellow, was the lead Resource Person at the ‘Teaching China in India Workshop’ organised by the United Board (Hong Kong) in collaboration with the Harvard Yenching Institute and Christ (Deemed to be) University from 30 May to 5 June.

Dr. Madhurima Nundy, Assistant Director and Associate Fellow, ICS and Prof. Rama V. Baru, Adjunct Fellow, ICS travelled to Beijing and Wuhan, from 25 May to 4 June, for the research project awarded by the National Institute on Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi on 'Student Mobility for Higher Education: Case of Indian Students Studying Medicine in China'. Our Research Associate, Dr. P.K. Anand, was in China for fieldwork as part of his China India Scholar Leaders Fellowship by the India China Institute, the New School for Social Research, New York. Dr. Muhammed Kunhi, ICS Research Associate, presented a paper titled ‘Memories of the First Maoist/Naxalite Violence in Kerala, India: Assessing Local Experience of the Ideological Politics of the Cold War’ in a workshop on ‘Reconceptualizing the Cold War: On-the-ground-experience in Asia’ held at the National University of Singapore on 21-22 May. Our Research Assistant, Mr. Uday Khanapurkar, made a presentation on ‘The Technology Factor in US-China Trade Contestations’ at an international conference held by the Chennai Centre for China Studies, Indian Council  World Affairs and Southern India Chamber of Commerce on 3 May. 

My engagements included participation in the 7th Regional Security Roundtable hosted by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore on 2-4 May, and in a panel discussion hosted by the National Defence College, New Delhi on 14 May.
