The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) continued its multidisciplinary research and programme activities on China and East Asia during the month of June.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

In collaboration with the Prospect Foundation, Taiwan and India International Centre, we held a Special Lecture titled ‘Perspectives on the Indo-Pacific and Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy’ on 7 June (Soundcloud). This event was also covered by the Taiwanese media (Report). The ICS also organized a Colloquium of ICS-HYI Fellowship recipients in collaboration with Sikkim University in Gangtok, Sikkim. The participants were Dr. Veda Vaidyanathan (Recipient in 2014), Research Associate, ICS; Dr. Nirmola Sharma (Recipient in 2014), Research Associate, ICS and Dr. Bhim Subba, ICS Visiting Research Associate (Recipient in 2015), and Mr. Madhurendra Kumar Jha (Recipient in 2016), Faculty member, Doon University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, ICS Vice-Chairperson, also participated in the Colloquium. ICS also hosted a delegation from the Institution of International Strategic Studies, the Central Party School of CPC for an interactive session with the fellows and researchers.

 

In our only Wednesday Seminar in the month, Dr. Sharon Condon, Senior Lecturer, Peking University HSBC Business School, Shenzhen, shared her experiences as a lecturer in China.

PUBLICATIONS

We published two ICS Occasional Papers in the month - Our Research Assistant, Mr. Uday Khanapurkar authored one on ‘The Rising Tide of Technological Denial against China’, while the second one was by Saurav Sarkar, Research Associate, Centre for Air Power Studies, and former Research Assistant, ICS, on ‘Understanding China’s Submarine Capabilities: Undersea Competition in the Indo-Pacific’.

 

Two blog posts were published this month by ICS Research Interns - ‘Limitations of the New Intellectual Property Reforms’ by Mr. Kuldeep Saini, and ‘Agricultural Industry amidst the 2018 US-China Trade War’ by Ms. Vidushi R. Singh.

IN THE MEDIA

Amb. Shyam Saran, Member, ICS Governing Council, penned two pieces this month. The first titled ‘Technology will drive the new Cold War’ appeared in the  Business Standard, while the second was published in the Indian Express on India’s imperative to refrain from picking sides in the ongoing US-China competition.

 

Amb. Kishan S Rana, Emeritus Fellow, ICS, authored a piece titled ‘Fixing India's Strategic Thinking Vacuum’ for The Wire. Dr. Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman, Visiting Research Associate, ICS, wrote an article on Infrastructure and Connectivity in Northeast India for the Heinrich Boll Stiftung. Our Research Assistant, Mr. Samanvya Hooda, wrote a piece on India’s Iran policy for Firspost.

Faculty Updates

Our Research Associate, Dr. P K Anand, continued his fieldwork in china, that began in May, as part of his China India Scholar Leaders Fellowship by the India China institute, the New School for Social Research, New York.
