Dear Friend,

 

June was the month of academic institutional engagements for the ICS in both India and China. In the meantime, the ICS faculty continued to offer their analyses and views on issues relating to China and East Asia.

EVENTS AND Activities

In month of June, the ICS co-hosted two major events. First, a day-long conference on Beyond Wuhan: How Far and Fast Can China-India Relations Go, was held in association with Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in India on 18 June, where Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Honorary Fellow, ICS, my predecessor Prof. Alka Acharya and I shared our thoughts. Second, a two-day Roundtable Dialogue on China-India Relations in the New Era with Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) in Shanghai on 20-22 June, where I led a seven-member delegation comprising Ambassador Biren Nanda, Senior Fellow, Delhi Policy Group, Prof. C. Raja Mohan, Director, Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, Dr. Manoj Joshi, Distinguished Fellow, Observer Research Foundation, Dr. Zorawar Daulet Singh, Fellow, Centre for Policy Research, Dr. Aravind Yelery, outgoing Assistant Director, ICS and Mr. Bhim Subba, Research Associate, ICS.

 

Amb. Chandrashekhar Dasgupta, currently a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change, gave a well-researched presentation on 'Panchsheel: Principles and National Interests in Foreign Policy'  (YouTube and SoundCloud) at the ICS Wednesday Seminar.

 

A five-member Sichuan University (SCU) delegation, led by CPC SCU Committee Executive Deputy Secretary Prof. Luo Zhongshu, visited us in June to discuss the regional security and economic environment as well as several ideas for advancing cooperation and joint research. A five-member delegation from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR also paid an academic visit to the ICS in the month. We also engaged in fruitful discussions with Prof. Chen Zhiwu, Director, Asia Global Research Institute, Hong Kong, among other visiting scholars.

Publications

Based on her archival research, Research Associate, Ms. Nirmola Sharma wrote an ICS Analysis, When Bose was in China!, which focussed on Subhash Chandra Bose’s wartime China connections, bringing to light his two little known visits to China during the war period. Research Assistant, Ms. Naina Singh’s ICS Occasional Paper The Kailash Sacred Conservation Initiative: Assessment and Potential for Cooperation in the Himalayas, analyzed the transboundary cooperation of China, India and Nepal in Hindukush Himalayas.

 

Our research interns Sharanya Menon and Sunaina Bose penned down their thoughts in the ICS Blogs on China's Social Credit System and United States withdrawal of sanction on ZTE, a Chinese telecom manufacturing company.

In the Media

In context of recent Shangri- La- Dialouge, ICS Governing Council member Amb. Shyam Saran has shared his views on the Indo-Pacific and the Quad in Hindustan Times. Our Adjunct Fellow, Anurag Viswanath, analysed the US- Korea Summit for Financial Express. I engaged in media interactions with CNBC and other outlets, including an interview to ThePaper.cn in Shanghai. 

Faculty Update

Dr. Aravind Yelery, outgoing Assistant Director, Dr. Madhurima Nundy, Associate Fellow and Mr. Bhim Subba, Research Associate, participated in a two-day International Seminar on Trends & Transformations in China’s Geo-Politics, Strategy, Society & Business, jointly organized by Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) and National Maritime Foundation, Tamil Nadu (NMF-TN), in Chennai, on 8-9 June. I spoke on ‘India-China Relations Post-Wuhan’ at the IIC Saturday Discussions Group on 2 June.

 

Two of our research faculty, Dr. Tshering Chonzom and Dr. P.K. Anand undertook their month-long research residency at the India China Institute, New School, New York, as part of the Fellowships awarded to them under the China India Scholars Leaders Initiative (2018-2020).
