The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) had an engaging month in July, continuing our studies and research on China and East Asia on the one hand, and holding different events and activities on the other

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

In collaboration with Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh (SNU), the ICS held a Residential Workshop on Research Methodology in Chinese Studies on  20-22 July. The Workshop – which is a follow-up of a similar collaborative Workshop on Preparing Research for Publication held in SNU in July 2018 – comprised of students pursuing M. Phil/PhD and also those interested in undertaking doctoral research from different parts of the country. In addition to sessions dealing with theorization, comparative studies and fieldwork, where resource persons from both ICS and SNU made presentations, there were also one-on-one sessions of students and resource persons to discuss the various aspects of writing. The following ICS Fellows and Faculty were the resource persons at the Workshop – Prof. Patricia Uberoi, Chairperson; Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty, Honorary Fellow; Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow and former Director; Dr. Ritu Agarwal, Adjunct Fellow; Dr. Nirmola Sharma, Research Associate and Dr. PK Anand, Research Associate.

 

The ICS also co-organised a Joint Panel on “China-India Relations and ‘Asian Age’” with Tsinghua University at the 8th World Peace Forum in Beijing on 9 July. Mr. Ravi Bhoothalingam, Honorary Fellow, ICS, Dr. Rudra Chaudhuri, Director, Carnegie India and I were on the panel along with three senior Chinese scholars and experts.

 

Five Wednesday Seminars were conducted this month – Our Research Associate, Dr. PK Anand, on his experiences of doing fieldwork in China; Mr. Samiran Gupta, Head of India, ICANN, on internet governance in Asia; Prof. Nabarun Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of International Relations, South Asian University, on Nehru’s Stand on China in the Security Council (Soundcloud); Mr. Dominic Karunesudas, founder and CEO of Technitics Consulting on China’s cyber-warfare (Soundcloud); and Dr. Medha Bisht, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of International Relations, South Asian University, on Meeting Kautilya and Sun Tsu: Reflections on India-China Relations (Soundcloud)

PUBLICATIONS

We published two ICS Research Blogs this month – Mr. Nishant Dilip Sharma, ICS Research Intern, published a piece titled ‘The dance of dualities in the Chinese Social Credit’, and Ms. Sanjana Dhar, ICS Research Intern wrote on the ongoing protests in Hong Kong.

 

IN THE MEDIA

Amb. Shivshankar Menon, Chairperson, ICS Governing Council, penned a piece entitled ‘Worse China–US relations: an Indian view’ which was published by Springer. Our Research Assistant, Mr. Uday Khanapurkar published a research article titled ‘India’s Huawei Conundrum’ in the India Quarterly journal. He also wrote on the slowdown in China’s services sector for Global Risk Insights.

 

Faculty Updates

Col. Virendra Sahai Verma, ICS Honorary Fellow, participated in the ‘South Asia Enclave’ organised by Oxford University Press, New Delhi on 11 July. Additionally, he presented a paper on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor at the ‘India-Pakistan Soldiers Initiative for Peace’ held in Bangalore on 6 July 2019. He also participated in a meeting relating to the Aman Dosti Yatra with Pakistan and in a literary meeting at the Noida Golf Club.

 

Dr. Hemant Adlakha, ICS Honorary Fellow, taught a two-week course at the University of International Relations (UIR), Beijing, entitled “Ongoing China-US Economic & Trade Frictions - Indian Perspectives”. He also participated in an international symposium on “International Relations: A Centennial Retrospect and Prospect” held at UIR on 1-4 July.

 

My engagements included the participation in a panel discussion as a panellist on “’Indo-Pacific’ Diplomacy and the Regional Order” at the 8th World Peace Forum in Beijing on 9 July and a lecture on “China as a Challenge” at the Centre for Air Power Studies, New Delhi on 22 July.
