The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) continued its wide range of events, activities, and research on China and East Asia in the first month of the year.

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIEs

In collaboration with the India International Centre, we held a one-day workshop convened by Prof. Madhavi Thampi, ICS Honorary Fellow, to assess initiatives to promote China Studies in India on 23 January (YouTube). The objective was to enable individuals and representatives of institutions who have been engaged in trying to promote Chinese studies in India, to share their experience and their views on the achievements till date, the various challenges and possible ways to overcome them, and also future directions. Prof. Patricia Uberoi, ICS Chairperson and Honorary Fellow, delivered the keynote address; the sessions included presentations by various stakeholders of China studies in India, and those from abroad. A report of the proceedings will be released shortly.

 

We also organised a Special Lecture this month, by Dr. Yifei Yan, Fellow in Social Policy, London School of Economics, on Policy Capacity Matters for Capacity Development: Comparing Basic Education Systems in India and China on 7 January (YouTube).

 

We conducted four Wednesday Seminars this month - Prof. Vipin Narang, Associate Professor of Political Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Member, MIT Security Studies Program, on the North Korean nuclear crisis (YouTube)(SoundCloud); Prof. Anoop Singh, Member, XV Finance Commission of India, on China’s bond markets and its financial integration with the world (YouTube)(SoundCloud); Prof. Mark W. Frazier, Professor of Politics, New School for Social Research, New York City (TNS) and Co-Director, India-China Institute, TNS, on interesting comparatives in protests pertaining to citizenship in Shanghai in 1919 and Hong Kong in 2019 (YouTube)(SoundCloud); and, Ms. Sowmiya Ashok, Journalist, Indian Express, on her experiences as the newspaper’s correspondent in Beijing over the last one year.

PUBLICATIONS

Prof. Raviprasad Narayanan, ICS Adjunct Fellow, authored an ICS Working Paper titled China, India and the United States: Wary trio?’.

 

We published three ICS Analyses this month - Drawing on valedictory remarks made at the 3rd India Forum on China @Goa, Amb. Shivshankar Menon, Chairperson, ICS Advisory Board and Former National Security Advisor, Government of India, authored China and Asia’s Changing Geopolitics; Dr. Mirza Zulfiqur Rahman, ICS Visiting Research Associate, wrote on River Regionalism: Locating Transboundary Rivers in Regional Cooperation Context in South Asia; and Dr. Usha Chandran, Assistant Professor, Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University penned a piece on the ‘Leftover Women of China.

 

Ms. Adveetya Kachiar, ICS Research Assistant, contributed an ICS Research Blog titled ‘Challenging International Norms: Chinese Censorship Model Goes Global.

 

IN THE MEDIA

 

Amb. Shyam Saran, Member, ICS Governing Council, penned a piece for The Economic Times on China’s increasing engagement with Myanmar. He also authored two pieces for Business Standard - one on India’s diplomatic space and another on the risks that divisive domestic policies generate for national security. Dr. P. K. Anand, ICS Research Associate wrote for Moneycontrol.com on Why BRI through India is wishful thinking at best. Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, ICS Vice-Chairperson and Honorary Fellow, was quoted in the Hindi Daily Hindustan on the relevance of China's one-child policy to India's proposed limited children policy. Her review of Beyond Regimes: China and India Compared by Prasenjit Duara and Elizabeth Perry (ed.) was published in China Review International (Hawaii University). 

 

Faculty Updates

On 9 January, Prof. Alka Acharya, Honorary Fellow, ICS, and Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, delivered a lecture at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in the Induction Training Programme for Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer Trainees of the 2019 batch on the topic ‘Role of Ideology in Foreign Policy'. She chaired a symposium organised by the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi, on Taiwan’s Presidential Election on 13 January. Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty, Honorary Fellow, ICS, participated in a discussion on his book, China's Transformation: the Success Story and the Success Trap led by the French Economist, Professor Guilhem Fabre at the Nabakrushna Chaudhury Centre for Development Studies, Bhubaneswar on 13 January. He also delivered the keynote address at a seminar on ‘Gandhi and the Contemporary World’ at Presidency University, Kolkata on 28 January. I attended and delivered the keynote address at the conference on ‘India-China Dynamics: Reappraising the Significance for Europe’, organised by the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin on 9-10 January.
