Dear Friend,

 

The Informal Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Wuhan on 27-28 April was the biggest talking point in the month. ICS Fellows and Researchers provided their informed opinions and analysis on the issue on a number of platforms. ICS also continued to lead informed academic and policy-oriented interventions on a range of issues related to China and East Asia. 

EVENTS AND Activities

ICS Wednesday Seminars ranged from Documented Study of India-China Relations 1947-2000 [Book Discussion of Mr. Avtar Singh Bhasin, Retired Director of the Historical Division of Ministry of External Affairs  (YouTube and SoundCloud)], to Developments in the Korean Peninsula [Round-Table Discussion involving Amb. Rakesh Sood, Distinguished Fellow, Observer Research Foundation and Amb. Vishnu Prakash, Former Ambassador to South Korea (YouTube and SoundCloud)] to India’s Evolving Strategic Response to China [by Dr. Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, Senior Fellow and Head of the Nuclear and Space Policy Initiative at Observer Research Foundation (YouTube and SoundCloud)] and China Factor in Bhutan [by Amb. VP Haran, Former Indian Ambassador to Bhutan during 2013-2014 (YouTube and  SoundCloud)].

 

The ICS also hosted a Special Lecture by Dr. Hon-Shiang Lau, Former Chair Professor of Operations Management at the City University of Hong Kong, on China’s Sovereignty Claims over Tibet through a wide range of pre-1949 documents and publications (YouTube and SoundCloud). 

Publications

An edited volume titled Higher Education in India and China by Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti, Vice-Chairperson, ICS, comprising select papers presented at a conference held in 2015 was brought out. The essays in the volume focus on the transformations in the last three decades in India and China as both the countries attempted to promote higher education to match their developments efforts.

 

Ms. Sharmila Kantha, Principal Consultant, Confederation of India Industry contributed an ICS Analysis on the United States-China Trade Confrontation and Implications for India.

 

ICS Research Associate, Mr. Bhim B. Subba had a blog post in ICS Blogs on Wang Qishan and his importance in the Chinese administration under Xi Jinping.

In the Media

The Informal Summit in Wuhan was the main focus in the media interactions and outreach of ICS faculty. I and my predecessor, Prof. Alka Acharya along with Honorary Fellow, Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty offered our views in The Wire. Prof. Mohanty also spoke to Newsclick. Prof. Acharya shared her views on the Summit and its political-economic context with Dr. Happymon Jacob in the inaugural episode of ‘National Security Conversations’ series in The Wire. She also penned an opinion piece in Hindustan Times. ICS Assistant Director, Dr. Aravind Yelery had a contribution in Marathi in Maharashtra Times.

 

Dr. Yelery was also quoted in CGTN, ChinAfrica, Beijing Review, and CNWest during the Boao Forum for Asia. Adjunct Fellow Dr. Atul Bhardwaj had a piece on China and the Indian Ocean in the Economic and Political Weekly. I also provided my comments to various media outlets, print and electronic.

Faculty Updates

ICS Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Sreemati Chakrabarti spent a month as a Visiting Faculty at the School of History and Culture, Central China Normal University, Wuhan, Hubei Province. During her time there, she gave lectures on Political History and Politics of Contemporary India, Women’s issues, Minorities, Rural India and Education.

 

I addressed National Defence College, India Foundation and other fora on issues relating to China. Assistant Director, Dr. Aravind Yelery attended the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan from 8-11 April.

 

Research Associate, Mr. Bhim B. Subba, participated in a closed-door Roundtable Discussion on 13th National Party Congress and Beyond organized by Centre for China Analysis and Strategy, Delhi on 17 April.
