ICS-HYI Fellowship for China Studies 2015-18

The recipients of the ICS-HYI Fellowship for 2015-18 are Severin Kuok and Bhim B Subba.

Severin Kuok is currently pursuing her Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India in the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS). She has done her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Center for Chinese and South East Asian Studies (CCSEAS) in JNU and was awarded the Vimla Saran Gold Medal for the highest CGPA in MA in Chinese language in 2012.  Severin’s MPhil dissertation was on the Chinese diaspora community in India under the guidance of Prof. B R Deepak, and she continues to work on the same subject for her doctoral research. She was a member of the editorial and research team for an Encyclopedia of India-China cultural contacts produced under the aegis of the Governments of India and China in 2014. She qualified the University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test in June 2012 and has been engaged by the CCSEAS, JNU as a guest faculty since July 2012. Severin’s paper titled, “Chinese Diaspora in India: The Impact of 1962 and Search for Identity” was published in the Review of Global Politics, Taiwan (2015). Prior to her current stint in academics, Severin has done her B.Com (Hons.) from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and has a Diploma in Business Management from New Zealand.

Bhim B. Subba is a research scholar in Chinese studies at the Department of East Asian Studies, Delhi University (DU). He is a major in political science from Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. He has been a ICI Ford Student Fellow in 2013, and an awardee of Confucius Institute Scholarship in 2013-14, where he spent one year Mandarin language training in Haerbin, Heilongjiang Province, PRC. He has done extensive fieldwork interviews in China for his research, and participated in many conferences and seminars. His research interests are Chinese politics, party, leadership elites and society.
