Comparing India and China in a number of areas has been a serious preoccupation of the Institute.
Seminars such as Fifty Years of India and China, Economic Reforms in the two countries, Foreign Investment and Economic Development were part of this programme.

Research on specific historical issues such as responses to Imperialism and political issues like the experience with local governance and anthropological questions relating to family and matrimony in minority areas has been carried out.
Themes in comparative literature of China and India have been taken up each year. Many of them involve participation of Chinese, Indian as well as Western scholars.
