Abstract

The highly visible environmental degradation and related health problems in China have drawn public attention. Environmental degradation is affecting lives of common people. From 1998 to 2005, there has been a four-fold increase in the number of public complaints on environmental issues in the form of complaint letters or personal visits to the EPBs. The heightened level of public concern has also been reflected in the growing coverage in the mass media. For example, the People’s Daily published 2,131 news articles on the environment from 1978 to 2008. Chinese government is also accepting peoples’ participation in environmental protection with some limitations and promoting and spreading environmental awareness among masses to build a harmonious society.
