Abstract

The year 2016 marks the 16th anniversary of China’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Since its accession in 2001, during the last 15 years, China’s economy has grown rapidly and has conferred tangible benefits on the world. As China’s accession to WTO required effective fine tuning of domestic and international policies, its entry not only deepened its ties with the world economy but also proved to be a major turning point in guiding China’s reform processes. Since the accession, China has attempted to align its policies with the WTO requirements and to comply with the commitments it made as a part of its accession protocol.

China’s status as the world’s second largest economy and its ever growing international economic integration makes it imperative to analyse how successful China has been in opening up of the economy and instilling confidence in WTO members with regard to its current status in the world scenario. Although, the WTO trade reviews have already cleared China from compliance related disputes, here is an attempt which investigates the whole phenomenon of China’s act of accession and the progress so far it has made to fulfil the obligations at WTO.
