Abstract

With the increasing status of India as an emerging economy, there has been renewed interest about the country across the world. Inconceivable growth of income of a large group of “middle class” since 1990s has created Indian consumerism. These new consumers have been described as the India’s changing by the business community, think tanks and academics. The presentation will examine the complexities that exist within this large group of consumers. Given the new perspective of business in India, there are great opportunities awaiting Japanese business. To understand the consumer behavior of India, the presentation will focus on the Tourism sector, which has been identified by the Japanese government as an important area of economic cooperation between India and Japan.
