The annual All India Conference of China Studies (AICCS) is a flagship event of the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi. Its principal objective is to spread interest and strengthen research in China and East Asian Studies in India. The AICCS is held once every year, in an Indian academic institution/university outside Delhi, ideally-but not necessarily- where research and teaching in China Studies are conducted. Ten conferences have been held so far – University of Delhi (2006 and 2009), Jadavpur University (2010), Central University of Hyderabad, (2011) Santiniketan (2012), IIM-Kozhikode (2013), Benaras Hindu University (2014), Sikkim University (2015), Mumbai University (2016) and Goa University (2017). This year, the 11th AICCS will be held in collaboration with Christ (Deemed to be University) and in cooperation with National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru from 15-17 November. The special theme of the 11th AICCS is – ‘Science, Technology and Innovation in China.’
The Organizing Institutions
The ICS is an inter-disciplinary research institution covering China and East Asia as well as India's borders with its eastern neighbours. The ICS seeks to promote interdisciplinary study and research on China and the rest of East Asia with a focus on expertise in China’s domestic politics, international relations, economy, history, health, education, border studies, language and culture, and on India-China comparative studies. It also seeks to support teaching programmes on the region in Indian universities, to train young social scientists and East Asia scholars, and to build a national network of scholars working on the East Asian region. The ICS produces a variety of publications, including the journal China Report that is in its 50th publication and provides informed and objective inputs for policy formulation by the Government of India. Christ (Deemed to be University) was established in 1969 as Christ College. Since its inception, it has undertaken path-breaking initiatives in Indian Higher education with the introduction of innovative and modern curricula, insistence on academic discipline, imparting of Holistic education and adoption of global higher education practices. The multi-disciplinary University focuses on teaching research and service offers Bachelors to Doctoral programmes in humanities, social science, commerce, management, engineering, education and law to over 18000 students. NIAS is a centre of higher learning in India engaged in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research in natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. It was founded by J.R.D Tata for providing an avenue for administrators, managers and social leaders for interaction and exchange of information with notable academics in the areas of science, arts and humanities. As a multidisciplinary Institute, NIAS combines scientific and humanistic perspectives on topics of national and international importance. Abstracts should mention the author’s name, institutional affiliation, email and postal address, together with the title of the paper and a brief CV and mailed to Ms. Nirmola Sharma at firstname.lastname@example.org. The organisers will cover costs incurred in travel by train (AC III Tier) and boarding and lodging expenses.
The best paper presented by a young scholar at AICCS will be given the Mira Sinha Bhattacharjea Award, instituted in the memory of one of the finest China scholars of India, a founding member of the ICS and its former Director. The award consists of prize money of Rs. 25,000/-. The selection is made by a group of senior scholars, based on methodology, argument and presentation.
