Abstract

This is an exploratory study of the new dataset with a quantitative analysis of the spatio-temporal patterns of Taiwanese Direct Investment in China from 1991 to 2014. What spatial and temporal patterns of foreign direct investment (FDI) would a small country have towards a rising great power, while they are politically adversarial to but economically interdependent with each other? We introduce a prototype database project of TDI China, which covers Taiwanese direct investment (TDI) to China since 1991 to 2014 and geo-referenced with the precision to the street level.

With TDI China, preliminarily discover analyze and visualize patterns of geographical distribution of TDI within the temporal context of different political and policy interactions between Taiwan and China. A variety of statistics and techniques in quantitative political geography are used for our analysis. Following that introduces the use of geographic information system (GIS) to produce and analyze the patterns in the data. Findings are mapped and visualized with GIS and other software and tools.

To enrich the literature of FDI and politics, and complete the database to identify more variables as well as generate more interesting hypotheses regarding how politics influences the selection of FDI location in our second phase of study.
